Ensuite bathroom outside a bedroom

Trends

The extended ensuite

European designers are creating exciting new multifunction spaces. And their ideas are coming to Australia.

The line between bathroom and bedroom has become blurred. With new design ideas, new inspirations and new technologies, modern bathrooms are breaking free of the restraints that have been placed on them. Convenience and luxury have just moved up a notch.

Reinventing the bathroom
Once the bathroom was down the hall, and the whole family had to queue to use it. The first breakthrough was the ensuite, next to the bedroom, but in a separate room. Now, in many homes, the bathroom is becoming part of the bedroom. It’s a trend that’s being seen throughout Europe, and now it has come to Australia.

Maximising living
Moving the bathroom into the bedroom creates one sweeping open space, and the feeling is light, airy and uncluttered. The old boundaries are breaking down and it is creating more space for living and an ultimate, private retreat. Of course, the toilet is often being concealed in its own compartment, ensuring the bedroom is purely the pamper zone.

Hotel style luxury
Some think this trend to bedroom/bathroom spaces has been fueled by the greater access to travel that people have enjoyed. Architects report that many of their clients travel overseas and return inspired by the boutique hotels in which they’ve stayed. Requests for luxurious five-star inspired rooms are now common, where the bathroom becomes a focal point of the living zone with easy access to entertainment and sleeping areas. After all, don’t we all want to retreat to the privacy of our bedroom after a long day, soak in the bath while watching a movie or catching up on the late news and then retire to bed cleansed, relaxed and ready for some quality sleep?

Making the space work
Stylish freestanding baths and basins are popular choices for the open plan bedroom/ bathroom. Products like the Lanark Fusion Oval Freestanding Bath, Sonia Atic Vanity Units and Mizu Eight Castle Cabinets are elegant additions and can also provide a feeling of openness that’s bright and uncluttered. Walk-in showers with frameless screens are also fantastic options and ensure an open and light feel. Look out or the Mizu Open Walk-In Shower System and the Mizu Wetroom Shower System. In fact a shower is no longer simply a shower, it can be a luxury shower experience, with built-in seating, or rain showers. Floating panels, often of translucent material like frosted glass, help give privacy while maintaining a sense of volume and light. The only limit is your imagination.
