Australian bathroom trends

Reece Buyer Steve Brennan is one busy man. When not scouring the globe attending the world's best bathroom fairs, he is hard at work in Australia, bringing the finest local and international designer pieces into Reece showrooms.

We caught up with Steve to hear his bathroom predictions for the year ahead.

Q: What are your predictions for 2010?

A: We are going to see the continuing trend of larger spaces being designed for walk-in style showering. These spaces will feature twin water-saving showerheads, which offer a fixed overhead shower and a hand shower, which are water-wise without compromising the shower experience.

We are also going to see bathroom designs allowing for more individual organisation, owing to the fact that men and women have different needs and design preferences.

Freestanding baths are the standout trend of the moment and they are now becoming available in all price brackets and design styles.

Q: What are the hot trends that you think will emerge during the year?

A: Vanity furniture will continue to evolve. Toilets in bathrooms are becoming more discreet, so unobtrusive in-wall cisterns will be prominent.

Q: Colour emerged as one of the major trends in 2009, will this continue into 2010?

A: Yes, this will definitely continue into 2010, particularly in vanity bench tops.

Q: Showers appeared to be the 'hero' product of 2009, what do you think the hero product of 2010 will be?

A: In-wall toilet suites will continue to gain momentum because of their clean lines and minimalist style.

Q: What are the current trends in tapware and showerheads?

A: Multiple water-saving showerheads are now available, which offer a range of water spray options within the one unit, without compromising the enjoyment of your bathing experience. Single mixer lever tapware is also prominent and offers a multitude of different designs.

Q: What should we expect with basins and vanities in 2010?

A: Basin shapes are noticeably softer; designs are moving away from the complete geometric square shape and are becoming more internally rounded. We can also expect to see vanity furniture that incorporates more individual storage solutions. Wall-hung vanities will continue to grow in popularity as they maximise space and provide a clean look. We will also see vanity units with plenty of shelf space, deep drawer options and solid surface tops with undermount bowls.
