Rooftop solar puts the others in the shade
America’s largest rooftop solar installation
The Gloucester Marine Terminal’s refrigerated warehouse on the Delaware River in New Jersey is big. And it has a big roof. In fact it’s more than 102,000 square metres.
And the largest rooftop solar installation in North America is about to be installed on it. The installation will generate 9 megawatts of electricity, roughly 80% of the terminal’s power demand. Or, to put it in perspective, enough to power around 1500 homes.
The USD 42 million project, known as Riverside Renewable LLC, will include 27,528 photovoltaic rooftop solar panels and is almost twice as large as any other rooftop solar installation in New Jersey. It’s expected to offset over 9,500 tonnes CO2 emissions, roughly equivalent to planting 400,000 trees, or removing 1,700 cars from the road.
It will rely in part on the availability of federal investment tax credits that supply tax incentives to spur the development of green energy sources systems nationwide, but also on the continued support of Solar Renewable Energy Certificates created through the New Jersey Renewable Portfolio Standards and that Riverside can sell.
SunPower provides high-efficiency panels and its T5 Solar Roof system, the industry’s first non-penetrating rooftop product, combining a high-efficiency solar panel, frame and mounting system into a single compact unit.
When you consider how much sun we get in Australia, and how much roof space sits idle, you realise there’s a lot we can learn from New Jersey. But we’re getting there. Solar panels will soon be installed on the roof of the Goyder Pavilion, at the Adelaide Showgrounds, generating one thousand kilowatts of electricity. It will be the largest rooftop photovoltaic installation in Australia, five times the size of the next largest at Melbourne’s Victoria Markets.
