The Whatever Will They Think Of Next Department

Just when you think you have seen it all when it comes to HVAC-R. Something comes along that truly makes you think- who and why would somebody think of that! That's what our new section 'Whatever will they think of next' is here to celebrate. It will look at those innovations in HVAC-R that make you think.

The refrigerated letterbox

The humble letterbox has been around for more than two hundred years. And in that time its design has hardly changed at all. But the letterbox is designed for letters, which is why it’s having trouble coping with the deluge of parcels being ordered over the internet.

And that’s particularly a problem for people ordering their groceries online. If you’re not home, your milk and other perishables could spend hours baking under a blazing Australian sun.

Which is why an Australian company, TZ Limited, has reinvented the letterbox.

They’re calling it the ourPAD. It’s a secure parcel locker that’s temperature-controlled by sensors to handle perishable items. In other words, a refrigerated letterbox. The size can vary, but it’s built to hold at least three bag loads, or half a shopping cart, of groceries.

Once a parcel is delivered, a notification is sent via SMS or email.

That’s good news if you’re expecting a couple of bottles of chilled bubbly from Santa this Christmas.

The bad news is that they’re not on the market yet. The company is going to spend the next twelve months looking for a partner to bring it to market.
