Did you know
Prostate cancer and cholesterol.
The link between cholesterol and heart disease is well established. Now there’s evidence that there’s a link between cholesterol and prostate cancer. Yet another reason to avoid a high-fat diet.
Slow heart. Long life.
Italian researchers found that having a resting heart rate above 70 beats per minute increases your risk of dying of heart disease by at least 78 per cent.
Struck by stroke.
In the next ten years more than half a million Australians will suffer a stroke. The majority will be men.
Can you pass the FAST test?
How do you know if your workmate’s had a stroke? The FAST test can mean the difference between life and death. It involves three simple questions:
- Face – can he smile, have his mouth or eyes dropped?
- Arms – can he raise both arms?
- Speech – can he speak clearly and understand what you say?
- Time – act FAST and call 000 immediately.
Type 2 diabetes.
It’s estimated that 1.5 million Australians are affected by diabetes, the majority of them men. Excess weight around your waist or abdomen increases your risk. If your waist is 90cm or more your risk increases. If your waist measures 100cm you’re in the highest risk category.
How healthy is the meat pie you had for lunch?
Not very. And probably not very meaty. Tests conducted by Choice on 22 frozen meat pie brands found that several contained less than the 25% meat content prescribed by the Food Standards Code, and none contained more than 31% meat. There was plenty of fat and salt content though. Fat ranged between 15 and 30 grams per pie, and the salt in some pies was up to 50 per cent of the recommended daily intake for adults.
