Friendly plumbing advice to share with your customers before the summer break

25 November 2015

With the holiday season around the corner, here are a few helpful tips to share with your customers before they go away on holiday.

Home holiday tips

Inside the home

Turn off your main water supply

Turn off the main valve that controls all the water for your home. This is the best protection against water leaks and catastrophic water damage. The main shutoff is usually located near your water meter.

Give water time to heat up when you return

If you turn off your hot water while you’re away, make sure when you return from holiday the storage tank has time to heat the water to a safe level of 60°C before use.

Check your thermostat

Check your thermostat on air conditioners or evaporative coolers to make sure they are not programmed to turn on while you’re away.

Turn off electrical appliances

Turn off and unplug all appliances, lights and equipment. A good one to consider is the spare refrigerator in the garage – if it’s not in use, turn off and unplug as well.

Check your washing machine
Make sure your washing hoses are attached securely and are in good condition. Laundry hoses are one of the major causes of leaks in homes.

Outside the home

Prep your plants

With a long hot summer forecast, it is important to maintain water to your garden while you’re away. Consider investing in an irrigation system or a self-watering timer to keep your plants happy during the holiday season.

Keep your pool in action

Don’t forget to reduce the operating time of your pool filter and automatic cleaning sweep to four to five hours, and only during off-peak time.
