‘Poop Perfume’ – A sanitation solution23 February 2017
We’ve all experienced the foul stench of a toilet, many times, in many different locations. Luckily for Australians, this is considered a ‘first world problem’. In several overseas communities this stench lingers far beyond the bathroom quarters.
Swiss-based perfumery and flavours company Firmenich have partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to find a fragrant solution.
Why has this seemingly trivial problem caught the eye of Bill Gates?
When you consider that 800,000 children die each year due to lack of hygiene, it’s an issue much bigger than a bit of smelly toilet time. Firmenich and Bill Gates aim to increase toilet usage in countries with poor sanitation with the amusingly coined ‘poop perfume’.
Once the perfume has been introduced into these communities, there are hopes it will encourage residents to use the facilities available, and subsequently reduce the spread of hygiene related disease.
Tackling the four elements that make up foul odour, the team have tested the new perfume on Bill Gates himself.
“Instead of stinky sewage, sweat, and ripe cheese, I sniffed a pleasant floral scent”.
Pilot projects are now being launched in India and Africa to test whether the fragrance will assist in increasing toilet usage.
At Reece, we’re also doing our bit for overseas water sanitation. The Reece Grant program helps everyday Aussie plumbers to undertake their own unique projects to assist these communities.
