VBA Update February 2018

11 January 2018

AMENDMENT No. 1 to AS/NZS 3500.2:2015

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) reminds plumbing practitioners carrying out sanitary plumbing and drainage work to familiarise themselves with Amendment No.1 to AS/NZS 3500.2:2015 Plumbing and drainage Part 2: Sanitary plumbing and drainage that was published by Standards Australia 30 June 2017.

The amendment specifies that:

  • The connection of any drain to a graded drain either above or below ground shall only be made with a junction with an upstream angle not greater than 45° degrees
  • Sweep or square junctions may however, still be used, such as at the top of a jump up, at the connection of a branch drain to a boundary trap riser or as an inlet connection to a gully riser
  • Square junctions shall be used at the connection of an inspection shaft to a graded drain or as inspection openings.

The amendment is designed to ensure the free-flowing function of sanitary drains and was introduced after consideration of industry feedback. Plumbing practitioners must comply with this amendment in their plumbing work.

For more information on this and other changes in the amendment, see the VBA’s Standards Alert at http://www.vba.vic.gov.au/practitioners/plumbing-standards

The amendment is also available free of charge from the SAI Global website at http://www.standards.org.au/Pages/default.aspx.
