Australian RECs Zones

STCs/RECs

Due to changes to the government's renewable energy target scheme, the term ‘RECs’ with reference to solar water heaters and heat pump water heaters is being replaced with the term 'STCs'.

Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STC's) are essentially a form of renewable energy currency designed to encourage the uptake of renewable energy. They are created when you have a solar or heat pump hot water system installed by your licensed plumber.

One STC is equivalent to one megawatt hour of electricity generation. Eligible hot water systems are entitled to create a certain number of STC's which is determined by the model and where you live in Australia.

STC's can be sold individually through the Australian Government's STC Clearing House for a fixed price of $40 per certificate. Alternatively STC's can be sold through a registered agent at a variable price which is determined by the STC Market (like the stock market)
