City of Gold Coast REHAU Awashaft trial

Project

City of Gold Coast Awashaft Trial Stapylton, Qld

Client

City of Gold Coast

Location

Gold Coast, QLD

Date

October, 2022

Background

Principal Contractor, SEE Civil was engaged by City of Gold Coast to plan, develop and install the civil infrastructure for a new industrial and commercial estate in Stapylton, South East Queensland.

With sustainability being more important than ever, and global supply chain challenges driving a shortage in traditional concrete products, SEE Civil approached Reece Civil to provide an alternative product for sewer and wastewater pipes.

Solution

SEE Civil and Reece Civil worked collaboratively with City of Gold Coast to conduct an initial trial of two Awashaft structures in Stage 1, with complete success. This secured approval to install the entire Stage 2 using Awashaft. We worked with City of Gold Coast Project Consultants to design the product specification for both the trial, and the broader site, ensuring that the product and its application adhered to strict council guidelines and requirements. Approximately 1,500m of Sewer PVC pipes including manhole structures which were installed using Awashaft.

“The fast installation of Awashaft is immensely beneficial to our project delivery, costs and mitigation of weather impact. Once approved by the local council, Awashaft would be the only option for all of our sites going forward."

The majority of the manhole structures needed to exceed 3m in depth, which is outside of the current standards within South East Queensland. At this depth, Awashaft was the obvious solution for increased safety and operational efficiency. Using the Reece distribution network, including the National Distribution Centre and the Brisbane Distribution Centre, we were able to ensure that stock was available within Australia, delivered to site in a timely manner, and as the customer and project required.

Reflection

Given the unprecedented rain the region saw across 2022, REHAU Awashaft delivered the only viable and project efficient solution. Using traditional concrete methods would have seen the project significantly delayed. Using Awashaft products, SEE Civil were able to save approximately 2-4 weeks overall for sewer and waste water installation which is a massive saving and efficiency in both time and money. The lightweight polymer Awashaft products can be lifted and loaded onto a vehicle safely with two people which has been a huge advantage when moving product around site. This has been a benefit for safety, construction efficiency, and environmental impact, eliminating the need to track large, heavy machinery hundreds of metres back and forth to lift the traditional concrete structures.
