Victoria lead-free brass transition update
On Sunday 29 March, the Victorian Government announced it will adopt lead-free plumbing requirements from 1 May 2026. As a result, from 1 May 2026, we will no longer sell brass products containing lead where they are used to supply drinking water in Victoria.
Can lead products still be installed after the date?
Only in limited circumstances, including:
Non-drinking water systems, such as:
Irrigation
Fire services
Industrial or non-potable applications
Excluded fixtures, including products such as toilets, showers and appliances that do not supply drinking water.
For any maintenance or replacement work on drinking water systems after 1 May 2026, lead-free fittings must be used in Victoria.
What do I do about jobs in progress?
The Victorian Building and Plumbing Commission has provided the following guidance on their website.
Where we’re at
We have already transitioned core lines within our range to lead-free.
All products sold will be lead-free on 1st May.
What this means for returns
From Thursday 30th April, no returns will be accepted for lead-containing brass products for standard stock lines. Reece will continue to meet all of its obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
