Are range hood flues required to terminate to atmosphere or into the roof space?

In accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022, specifically Part 10.6 and Part 10.8 of the Housing Provisions, mechanical exhaust systems serving kitchens, kitchen rangehoods, bathrooms, sanitary compartments, and laundries must discharge directly to outdoor air. This requirement is designed to ensure effective removal of moisture-laden and contaminated air, thereby supporting indoor air quality and condensation management.

Acceptable discharge pathways include direct venting to the atmosphere via the roof or through a compliant duct or shaft leading to an external eave vent. Discharging exhaust air into enclosed roof spaces is not permitted unless those spaces are adequately ventilated to the outdoors in accordance with condensation management provisions outlined in Clause 10.8.3
