With a busy lifestyle and two young daughters, former winner of The Block and interior stylist, Dea Jolly, knows a thing or two about what’s important in a family bathroom. We asked Dea to share a few of her design secrets for creating a family bathroom that will ensure a smooth morning production line, and comfort for everyone.

What’s the very first step to designing a bathroom for the whole family?
Dea: The first thing to consider is the floor plan. If space allows, family bathrooms should include a bath. The bath can become the centrepiece or main feature of the bathroom, and always looks gorgeous centred under a window or with a statement pendant hanging above it. I love a freestanding bath!

Product pick:Clearwater Formoso 1500 Freestanding Bath

What about bathrooms that don’t have space for a bath? What is your recommendation with showers?
Dea: A single shower is usual for the main bathroom and the combination of a large overhead showerhead and a handheld rail shower covers everybody's shower preferences and allows for easy shower cleaning.

Product pick: Posh Solus MKII 5F Rail Shower

Tell us, what’s the best type of vanity to use in a family bathroom?
Dea: The family bathroom will usually be accommodating several family members, so the vanity should be generous in size, with one basin and plenty of storage. The addition of a mirror cabinet over the vanity is a clever way to add extra storage space and can be custom made to suit any size.

Product pick: Issy Z8 Butterfly 1500 Vanity Unit with Omvivo Venice 700 Counter Basin

What’s the most important thing to account for when designing for the men in your family?
Dea: Men are often taller and need to be able to fit comfortably under the showerhead. If ceiling height allows, 2 metres off the floor is ideal, unless you have a giant husband like I do, then you will have to put it even higher!

And for women?
Dea: Lighting is super important for females who are often getting ready for the day, doing their make-up and hair. Plenty of storage is also an important consideration – for all the lotions, hair products and other grooming accessories we all collect!

What’s the one luxurious touch that you would add to all bathrooms?
Dea: Underfloor heating has become an essential in my bathrooms; it is such a luxury on cold mornings and creates the added bonus of drying the water quickly after a shower for less cleaning!

Product pick:Stiebel Eltron in Shower Underfloor Heating
